The University of Toronto was established in 1827 as the King's College and adopted its current name in 1850. It is a collegiate university with eleven colleges and is the oldest in the province of Ontario. Over the years, the University of Toronto (U of T) has consistently been included among the top universities. For 2020 and 2021, the University of Toronto is placed 18th in Times Higher Education's (THE) University Ranking. The college had previously been ranked 21. While Times Higher Education (THE) accords equal weight to Teaching, Research, and Citations at 30% each, QS places the greatest emphasis on Academic Reputation (40%) followed by Faculty/Student Ratio and Citations per Faculty at 20% each.
A university's reputation among academics or employers is not taken into account by the ARWU (Shanghai Ranking), which has placed the university at number 23 for 2020.
