Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How many attempts are there in IELTS?

A. There are no restrictions on the number of attempts as long as you are willing to pay the IELTS registration fees. It is not uncommon for test takers to take multiple attempts at the exam in order to achieve a satisfactory band score, which requires retaking the exam. The cost of the IELTS exam remains the same regardless of whether a student is retaking it.

Q. How many times is the IELTS held in a year?

A. The computer-delivered IELTS tests are administered throughout the week, with a maximum of three sessions per day. The paper-based test is available four times a week and has 48 fixed test dates in a calendar year. The number of test dates available for Academic, General Training, UKVI and Life Skills varies as per the test centres.

Q. What happens if I don’t pass the IELTS exam?

A. There is no pass or fail in the IELTS exam. You can determine the level of your proficiency by reading the descriptor corresponding to the band score you have obtained in each module and overall in the exam. If you did not achieve your desired band score, you can get your test reevaluated by paying an administrative charge. Test takers also have the option to retake the IELTS exam by paying the registration fee.

Q. What is a good score in the IELTS exam?

A. The IELTS exam primarily helps with studying abroad in an English-speaking country or immigrating to one. There are different band score requirements for each, and it also depends on the policies of universities and visa and immigration departments of countries such as the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. An overall band score of 6.5 is generally considered competitive for applying to most universities in the above-mentioned countries. Higher-ranked universities and programs might have high IELTS band score requirements.

Q. How can I check my IELTS date availability?

A. Availability of IELTS exam dates can be checked from the official website of IDP IELTS India. It is advised to book your test date in advance, keeping in mind the university application deadline. The Speaking test is usually held within 7 days pre or post the LRW test date.

IELTS Result

The wait for IELTS test results is brief. Whether you opt for the online or offline version, your scores will be released within a week for computer-based test results or 13 calendar days for paper-based test results.

Once your scores are available, you will receive notifications via email and SMS. Conveniently, you can access your Test Report Form (TRF) by logging into your personal IELTS account on the official IDP IELTS website for India. This allows you to view and assess your performance in the exam promptly.

The TRF presents your performance results across four key sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking, in addition to the overall IELTS score band. Each of these five scores is indicated on a 9-band scale.

Typically, a score of 6.0 or higher on the IELTS is widely regarded as a favourable score, ensuring eligibility for admission to prestigious universities in countries such as the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and other English-speaking countries.

Once you receive your IELTS results, please note that your score remains valid for two years.

IELTS Band Score

Your IELTS score will be determined by combining the band scores from the four sections. Each of the four skills (Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking) will be assessed and assigned a band score ranging from 0 to 9.

Additionally, an overall band score will be awarded. In each test section, you can achieve whole scores (e.g., 5.0, 6.0, 7.0) or half scores (e.g., 5.5, 6.5, 7.5).

All the scores are determined by using band descriptors.

IELTS band descriptors are a set of guidelines that help both test takers and examiners understand the performance expectations for each skill (reading, listening, writing, and speaking) at different band levels.

The band descriptors consist of four main categories

  • Task achievement/response
  • Coherence and cohesion
  • Lexical resource
  • Grammatical range and accuracy

The way these descriptors are assessed varies from section to section.

For example, in the writing section, the band descriptors may include criteria such as the ability to address the task requirements effectively, coherence and organisation of ideas, range and accuracy of vocabulary usage, and grammatical correctness.

In the Speaking section, these descriptors have different usage. Overall, they provide a clear breakdown of performance characteristics for each band score, ranging from Band 1 (non-user) to Band 9 (expert user).

By referring to the band descriptors, you can understand the specific skills and levels of performance required to achieve your desired band score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is getting IELTS 7 band score hard?

A. No, scoring 7 bands in IELTS is not hard but requires consistent effort. To score a 7 in IELTS, you must have a scheduled study timetable, practice every day and take multiple practice tests throughout the week. Experts suggest at least 6-8 weeks of preparation. Taking coaching classes will also help if you’re a beginner. Band 7 is a great target. However, bands 6.0-6.5 tend to be enough for most undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Q. How is the IELTS band score calculated?

A. You will be marked on a scale of 0-9 for each section of IELTS. These sections are marked based on band descriptors. The number of correct answers is converted into a band score using a conversion table for the Listening and Reading sections. You do not lose points for wrong answers. In the Writing and Speaking sections, examiners assess the performance based on specific criteria and allot a score. These scores are then averaged to get an overall IELTS band score.

Q. Which country will accept 5.5 bands in 2023?

A. Australia, Canada, and some universities in the UK are a few countries that accept a 5.5 IELTS band score. Most countries' ideal score for undergraduate degrees is 6.0, and 6.5 for post-graduate degrees. However, IELTS requirements are subject to change depending on your course. Most advanced degrees, such as psychology, medicine, and sometimes, MBA, require a 6.5+. Top universities usually require a high IELTS score due to high competition and low acceptance rates.

Q. If I get 37 out of 40 answers right in IELTS Listening, what will be my IELTS band score?

A. If you get 37 out of 40 answers right in IELTS listening, your IELTS band score will be 8.5. To get the ideal band score of 6.0 and above, you must correctly answer at least 25 out of 40 listening questions.

Q. Can I retake the IELTS test to improve my band score?

A. Yes, you can retake the IELTS as many times as you wish. Though, we highly recommend that you take enough time to prepare well before the retest. IELTS recently announced a ‘one-skill retake’ facility, which lets you retake just one section of IELTS (preferably the one you scored least in). However, this is yet to come into effect in India.
