The institute, originally known as Carleton College, was established in 1942 to assist returning World War II veterans. In 1952, the provincial government granted the institute university status, and in 1957 it adopted the name Carleton University. When compared to the university's rankings in 2018 (489), 2019 (483), and 2020 (483), the US News & World Report, which is exclusive to the US, has Carleton University ranked at 471 for 2021.

 

Reputation Indicators, including Bibliometric Indicators, Scientific Excellence Indicators, and Global and Regional Research Reputation, are considered by US News & World Report. For the current year, 2021, the institution has received rankings from QS World University Ranking and THE (Times Higher Education), which consider academic and research repute.
